2-10-2024 (BANGKOK) A lightning-induced fire at a Royal Thai Army facility in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province has caused significant damage to an unused wooden structure, military officials confirmed on Wednesday. The incident, which occurred at the Explosive Ordnance Factory of the Ordnance Industry Center, thankfully resulted in no injuries or fatalities.
Lt. Col. Kanyanat Ponnipatkul, assistant spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, provided details of the event that unfolded on October 2, 2024. According to the official report, a bolt of lightning struck near an electrical transformer at the military compound located in Ban Ko Subdistrict, Mueang Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District. The strike caused the transformer to explode, with the resulting flames rapidly engulfing a nearby wooden building.
Investigations revealed that the affected structure was an old, disused wooden building that housed no equipment or valuable assets at the time of the incident. This fortunate circumstance likely prevented more severe consequences or potential hazards given the nature of the facility’s operations.
The Royal Thai Army’s response to the emergency was swift and effective. Personnel from the unit, alongside local firefighters, were quickly mobilised to contain the blaze. Their concerted efforts proved successful, with the fire brought under control by 3:00 p.m. on the same day.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Army has taken prompt action to assess the situation and mitigate any potential risks. The Ordnance Department has been tasked with conducting a thorough inspection of the area to identify any damage beyond the affected building. Additionally, they have been instructed to expedite the clean-up process and restore normal operations at the facility as quickly as possible.
