20-2-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysian badminton icon, Lee Chong Wei, has expressed deep concerns about the state of the sport in Malaysia, stating that he “feels like giving up” and urging for “drastic” changes to save the game in the country ahead of the Olympics.
His comments come in the aftermath of Malaysia’s 3-0 defeat to China in the men’s final at the Asia Team Championships in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (Feb 18). Despite China not fielding their strongest side, they dominated Malaysia. The women’s crown was lifted by India, while the host country failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals.
The tournament played a crucial role in earning ranking points for this summer’s Paris Olympics.
Lee, a Malaysian badminton legend who retired in 2019 with a career that included three Olympic silver medals and three world silver medals, didn’t mince his words. “I know the truth hurts, but I think Malaysian badminton will only go downhill from here if nothing is done,” he stated, as reported by The Star newspaper.
Expressing his frustration, Lee emphasized the urgent need for changes within Malaysia’s badminton authorities. He called for a renewed focus on promoting younger players, pointing out the lack of discipline and commitment among the current crop of players.
“We have to make some drastic changes,” urged the 41-year-old, adding a stark warning, “If not, we will be left behind, left far behind, and badminton will no longer be one of the top sports in this country. I really can’t bear to face that.”
