1-8-2023 (MANILA) According to recent data released by Airbnb, more and more Filipinos are embracing solo travel as their preferred way of exploring the world. The travel hosting platform reported a remarkable 185% year-on-year increase in solo travel in 2022 compared to the previous year, showcasing a growing trend in independent and adventurous journeys.
Notably, the data also revealed a substantial 200% surge in private room bookings last year. Solo travelers are increasingly opting for private rooms, which come at an average price of P2,200 per night. These private accommodations have gained popularity among solo adventurers, offering a sense of comfort and security while allowing them to connect with local hosts and immerse themselves in the culture.
Airbnb further disclosed that private room hosts earned a combined revenue of over P540 million in 2022, a testament to the thriving solo travel scene in the Philippines.
In response to the increasing demand for solo travel, Airbnb has taken steps to enhance safety measures for solo travelers. The “Solo Traveller Safety” feature has been expanded to cover more than 50 languages, including Tagalog. This feature enables solo travelers to access expert safety tips, share their reservation itinerary with loved ones, and add emergency contacts to their profiles, providing an extra layer of security during their journeys.
The rise of solo travel in the Philippines mirrors a global trend, with an increasing number of travelers worldwide opting to explore destinations on their own. In the United States, solo travel experienced significant growth, with 16% of Americans traveling alone in 2022. This number has surged to a staggering 25%, representing 83 million American solo travelers in 2023.
As more Filipinos venture into solo travel, some local government units are also taking initiatives to ensure the safety and inclusivity of tourists. Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte emphasized the city’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all types of tourists, catering to the diverse needs and preferences of solo adventurers and groups alike.
