Authorities estimate that more than 200 people were engaged in loading and unloading activities at the site when disaster struck. Early accounts confirm the heart-wrenching news that an entire family aboard a floating boat was engulfed by the landslide. The waters of the Amazon River are now littered with debris from boats, pipes, houses, and vehicles, painting a grim picture of the scale of destruction.
Experts suggest that the catastrophe may be linked to severe riverbank erosion, a problem exacerbated by the prolonged drought currently afflicting the Amazon region. This tragic incident underscores the growing environmental challenges faced by communities along the world’s largest river.
In response to the calamity, Manacapuru’s city council issued a sombre statement, expressing deep regret over the accident. The council confirmed that teams from Civil Defence, the Military Firefighters Corps, and other relevant sectors have been deployed and are working tirelessly at the site. Their primary focus is on rescuing those who may still be trapped beneath the rubble and mud.
