12-10-2024 (BANGKOK) Thai authorities have apprehended a Korean national for allegedly performing cosmetic procedures without proper licensing at a clinic in Bangkok’s upscale Pathumwan district. The arrest, which took place on Friday, marks a significant step in Thailand’s efforts to regulate its booming beauty industry.
The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was caught red-handed while providing consultations and evaluating beauty enhancement services for potential clients. The operation was the result of a coordinated effort between the Department of Health Service Support (DHSS) of the Ministry of Public Health and local law enforcement, following a tip-off about the unlawful employment of a foreign medical practitioner.
Dr Phanuwat Panket, director-general of the DHSS, confirmed that his department had alerted both the police and the Medical Council of Thailand upon receiving information about the illegal activities. “We take these matters very seriously,” Dr Phanuwat stated. “The health and safety of patients are our top priority, and we will not tolerate unlicensed individuals performing medical procedures.”
The suspect now faces charges under the Medical Profession Act BE 2525, which prohibits the practice of medicine without proper registration and permission. If convicted, the Korean national could face up to three years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to 30,000 baht.
Furthermore, Dr Phanuwat announced that the DHSS intends to file a separate complaint against the owner of the clinic. Under the Hospital Act BE 2541, the proprietor could be held accountable for negligence in allowing an unlicensed practitioner to operate on their premises.
