5-1-2025 (KUALA LUMPUR) Investigators have located crucial evidence in last month’s devastating multi-vehicle collision that claimed seven lives on Malaysia’s North-South Expressway. Police officials confirmed today that an iron wheel rim, believed to be from the loose lorry tyre that triggered the fatal crash, has been recovered at a refuse facility in Johor.
The component was discovered at the Waste Disposal Centre along Jalan Solok in Tangkak and was promptly surrendered to authorities by a Propel subcontractor, according to Alor Gajah District Police Chief Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah. The rim has been dispatched to the Chemistry Department for forensic analysis.
The catastrophic incident occurred on 23 December at kilometre marker 204 of the northbound carriageway, when a coach carrying 27 passengers struck a detached lorry tyre obstructing the centre lane. The impact sent the coach careening into oncoming traffic, where it collided with multiple vehicles including two lorries, a car, and a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).
The devastating chain reaction claimed the lives of seven individuals, including five occupants of the MPV and two people aboard the coach – the driver and one passenger. An additional 33 people sustained injuries in what stands as one of the deadliest crashes on the expressway in recent months.
Authorities continue their thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the tyre becoming detached and the subsequent loss of life on one of Malaysia’s busiest transport arteries.
