23-5-2024 (YANGON) The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) has reportedly seized another Myanmar military base near Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State. Colonel Naw Bu, spokesperson for the KIA, an ethnic armed group opposed to the Myanmar military regime, announced on 22nd May that KIA fighters had captured the infantry battalion’s base on the evening of 21st May.
The base, which played a crucial role in providing security for villages such as Aung Mya 1 and 2 and the town of Waingmaw, is of significant strategic importance.
Colonel Naw Bu further stated that the KIA now controls the main road running south, a vital trade route near the Chinese border. This development adds to the growing list of strategic victories for the KIA in recent weeks.
The Myanmar military government has yet to comment on these recent clashes. However, the KIA’s advantage has been increasingly apparent, with the group having seized control of eight towns in Kachin and Shan states and around 100 Myanmar military outposts in recent weeks.
