26-7-2023 (PHNOM PENH) A local reporter in Kampong Speu province’s Oral district has been put in pre-trial detention for lese-majeste in relation to the July 23 general election. Svay Sophat was arrested after going live on Facebook and asking a question about the King’s willingness to sign a letter urging people to vote and his refusal to endorse a death sentence for convicted criminals.
Sophat, who wrote for the “Nak Merl Phlov” website, allegedly committed the offence in Trapaing Chor commune’s Phlech village and admitted to being responsible for the live post following police questioning. Investigating Judge Pen Kamongka detained the 50-year-old under Article 437 of the Criminal Code.
Rights groups have emphasized the importance of responsible reporting, urging journalists to refrain from any language that could be seen as an insult to the monarchy. Am Sam Ath, deputy director of rights group LICADHO, said the selection of words is crucial in reportage.
