8-5-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) midfielder Safiq Rahim has found himself at the receiving end of an anonymous assault, joining a string of footballers who have been targeted in recent incidents.
The 36-year-old footballer took to Instagram late Tuesday night (May 7), sharing a photo of his vandalized vehicle along with a police report detailing the ordeal.
“I never anticipated being targeted near the JDT training centre. In times like these, we must remain vigilant,” Safiq captioned the post.
As per the police report, the incident unfolded as Safiq was en route from Jalan Sri Gelam to Lido Beach in Johor Darul Ta’zim. At approximately 10:05 pm on Tuesday, he found himself accosted by two suspects on a motorcycle.
According to Safiq’s account, the pillion rider brandished a hammer, shattering the rear windshield of his vehicle in an unprovoked attack. Reacting swiftly, Safiq brought his car to a halt, prompting the assailants to position themselves in front of his vehicle while one of them menacingly wielded the weapon.
In a bid to deter further aggression, Safiq reversed his car, prompting the suspects to hastily flee the scene.
Commenting on the incident, Johor Bahru South OCPD Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat confirmed that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
“The case is being probed under Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief. A comprehensive police statement will be issued once further details emerge,” Assistant Commissioner Raub added.
This latest episode follows a series of attacks targeting footballers in Malaysia. Just days ago, national winger Faisal Halim, also known as Mickey, fell victim to an acid attack at a go-kart circuit in the Klang Valley. Prior to that, on May 2, national winger and Terengganu player Akhyar Rashid was assaulted and robbed near his residence in Kuala Terengganu.
