22-1-2025 (JAKARTA) Metropolitan Police investigators have launched a detailed forensic examination into the circumstances surrounding the death of retired Brigadier General Hendrawan Ostevan, whose body was discovered in the Marunda waters of North Jakarta earlier this month.
The investigation, conducted jointly by the Metro Jakarta Police Criminal Investigation Unit and the National Police Forensics Laboratory, focused on reconstructing the final moments before the retired general’s Toyota Vios plunged into the sea at KCN Marunda Port.
Metropolitan Police spokesperson Chief Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Indradi told reporters that investigators meticulously mapped the vehicle’s trajectory from its entry point to the port through to Pier 07-08, where the incident occurred.
“Our forensics team has conducted precise measurements to determine the vehicle’s speed from the CCTV capture point to the pier’s edge,” Indradi said. “This analysis is crucial in corroborating witness statements with physical evidence at the scene.”
The vehicle, bearing registration number B-1606-LB, was recovered several days after Ostevan’s body was found on 10 January. Investigators noted several peculiar details about the recovered vehicle: the handbrake was engaged, the driver’s window was down, the windscreen was missing, and the front passenger-side tyre had become detached.
CCTV footage from the early hours of Thursday, 9 January, captured Ostevan’s final known movements, showing his vehicle travelling along Pier 07-08 before its fatal plunge into the harbour waters.
The circumstances leading to the retired general’s death remain unclear. Investigators are particularly interested in the unusual state of the recovered vehicle, especially the engaged handbrake, which suggests the possibility of foul play or other contributing factors.
The Metropolitan Police have not yet released their conclusions regarding the cause of death, as the investigation continues. The forensic examination is expected to provide crucial insights into whether Ostevan’s death was accidental or if other factors were involved.
