4-12-2024 (JERUSALEM) Israeli authorities have heightened their security warnings for citizens travelling in Southeast Asia, citing credible intelligence of potential terrorist threats in the wake of a Jewish rabbi’s murder in Dubai.
The National Security Council of Israel announced on Saturday that investigators had uncovered plans for additional terrorist activities across Southeast Asia, with Thailand identified as a primary target. The warning comes after the killing of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, an Israeli-Moldovan religious leader, whose death has sent shockwaves through the Jewish community.
UAE authorities have detained three suspects in connection with the murder of Rabbi Kogan, whose body was discovered on 24 November following days of searching after he was reported missing in Dubai. The UAE’s Ministry of Interior has emphasised its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of all within its borders, though details about the suspects remain undisclosed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterised the killing as an “abhorrent act of antisemitic terrorism” during an emergency cabinet meeting, vowing to pursue both the perpetrators and their handlers “to the fullest extent of the law.”
In response to the situation, Israeli authorities have strengthened their advisory against non-essential travel to the UAE. Citizens have been urged to avoid establishments associated with Jewish and Israeli communities, maintain social media discretion regarding travel plans, and limit unnecessary movement.
The White House has condemned the attack, with US National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett praising the UAE’s swift response while emphasising the need for full accountability for both the perpetrators and their supporters.
The murder has particular significance given Rabbi Kogan’s role as a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary. The 28-year-old religious leader had been instrumental in developing Jewish community life in the Emirates, working extensively on expanding access to kosher food and religious services. He had recently been joined by his wife Rivky following their 2022 marriage.
