6-5-2024 (TEL AVIV) In a move that could signal the imminent launch of a ground assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, Israeli armed forces have reportedly begun evacuating Palestinian civilians from the area, according to an Israeli broadcaster. This development comes amidst heightened tensions and escalating hostilities between Israel and Palestinian militants in the region.
According to Army Radio, the evacuations are currently focused on a few peripheral districts of Rafah, with evacuees being directed to tent cities in the nearby Khan Younis and Al Muwassi areas. While the Israeli military has not immediately confirmed the report, their actions suggest that preparations for a potential ground offensive are underway.
The IDF has expanded the humanitarian area in Al-Mawasi to accommodate the increased levels of aid flowing into Gaza. This expanded humanitarian area includes field hospitals, tents and increased amounts of food, water, medication and additional supplies.

In what appears to be the initial stages of a civilian evacuation, the Israeli military has called on Palestinians residing in the eastern parts of Rafah to move to a designated “humanitarian area.” The military has stated that it will employ various means, including posters, text messages, phone calls, and media announcements, to “encourage the gradual movement of civilians in the specified areas.”
After seven months of sustained offensive against Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that governs the Gaza Strip, Israeli authorities have identified Rafah as a stronghold harboring thousands of fighters. They assert that achieving victory in the ongoing conflict is impossible without taking control of the city.
However, the prospect of a high-casualty operation in Rafah, where over a million displaced Palestinians have taken shelter, has raised grave concerns among Western powers and neighboring Egypt. The potential humanitarian toll of such an assault could further exacerbate the already dire situation in the region.
The escalating tensions in Gaza have drawn international attention, with calls for restraint and diplomatic efforts to prevent further bloodshed. Humanitarian organizations have also warned of the potential catastrophic consequences of a full-scale ground offensive, given the densely populated nature of the area and the already strained resources available to civilians.
