8-10-2024 (JERUSALEM) On the first anniversary of the devastating October 7 attack, Israel found itself grappling with a rapidly expanding conflict that threatens to engulf the entire Middle East. As Israelis gathered for solemn ceremonies and impassioned protests, the nation’s northern border erupted in violence, with Hezbollah launching rocket attacks on major Israeli cities and Israel responding with a barrage of airstrikes on Lebanese territory.
The day began with commemorative events across Israel, including a poignant memorial for the victims of the Nova Music Festival, where 364 people lost their lives and 44 were taken hostage in last year’s Hamas-led assault. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing his cabinet in Jerusalem, vowed to “change the security reality in our region” to prevent any recurrence of the October 7 tragedy.
However, the sombre mood was shattered as Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group, fired a volley of rockets at Haifa, Israel’s third-largest city. The Israeli military reported that approximately 190 projectiles entered Israeli airspace throughout the day, resulting in at least 12 injuries. Hezbollah claimed to have targeted military bases near Haifa with “Fadi 1” missiles and launched additional strikes on Tiberias, some 65 kilometres away.
In response, the Israeli Air Force conducted extensive bombings of Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) described their ground operation in Lebanon as “localised, limited and targeted”, but observers noted a significant escalation in recent weeks. Within a single hour on Monday, Israel reportedly struck 120 targets in southern Lebanon, including Hezbollah’s special forces units, missile installations, and intelligence facilities.
Tomorrow marks a year since Hezbollah dragged the region into a multi-front war and began their constant attacks on Israeli civilians.

The conflict’s toll continues to mount on both sides. Israel reported the loss of two soldiers in Lebanon, bringing their military death toll in the region to 11. Meanwhile, Lebanon’s health ministry reported dozens of casualties, including 10 firefighters killed in an airstrike on a municipal building near the border. The expanding conflict has displaced an estimated 1.2 million people in Lebanon, raising fears of widespread destruction similar to that seen in Gaza.
As the violence intensifies, concerns are growing about the potential for a broader regional war. The United States, Israel’s key ally, is closely monitoring the situation. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the US believes Israel’s ground operation in Lebanon remains limited in scope. However, the involvement of other regional actors, such as Yemen’s Houthi movement, which launched a surface-to-air missile at central Israel, underscores the conflict’s expanding nature.
The anniversary also saw political figures in the United States marking the occasion. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Donald Trump all held events commemorating the Hamas attack, highlighting the conflict’s significance in US foreign policy and domestic politics.
The ongoing crisis has its roots in the October 7, 2023 attack, when Hamas-led militants killed approximately 1,200 people in Israeli towns and kibbutzim near the Gaza border, taking about 250 hostages. This assault, described as the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, prompted a massive Israeli offensive in Gaza that has reportedly resulted in nearly 42,000 Palestinian deaths, according to local health authorities.
