30-3-2024 (TAIPEI) Authorities in Taiwan have made a shocking discovery during the investigation into the death of a man who consumed char kway teow. Blood samples taken from the victim revealed the presence of a lethal toxin known as bongkrekic acid. This incident has raised concerns about food safety and prompted a thorough examination of the restaurant’s suppliers to pinpoint the source of the toxin.
The victim’s blood samples were analyzed, and forensic experts confirmed the presence of bongkrekic acid, a rare toxin produced during the fermentation process of corn and coconut-based products. The toxin is known to have detrimental effects on vital organs such as the liver, brain, and kidneys, and can be life-threatening in severe cases.
The investigation is currently focused on the noodles served in the restaurant, as experts suspect that the toxin may have been present in them. Authorities are meticulously inspecting the restaurant’s supplier in order to determine the origin of the toxin and prevent any further incidents.
In addition to the tragic fatality, a total of 25 individuals who dined at the Polam Kopitiam’s outlet in Taipei have experienced food poisoning symptoms. Among them, two men have tragically lost their lives, while five others remain in intensive care.
The authorities have taken swift action in response to this incident. Three individuals linked to the case, including the franchise owner Li Fang-hsuan, the store manager Mr. Wang, and the cook Mr. Hu, have been questioned and are currently prohibited from leaving the island. Mr. Hu, who was temporarily filling in as the chef, claimed to have followed proper procedures while cooking and stated that Mr. Li and Mr. Wang were responsible for ingredient procurement and storage.
Meanwhile, the regular chef, who was on vacation during the incident, has returned to Taiwan and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. In a separate development, Taiwanese authorities have fined Mr. Li NTD2.5 million (approximately S$105,593) for providing false information regarding the restaurant’s business registration.
