15-6-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysia has not yet approached Interpol for assistance in locating comedian Jocelyn Chia, as confirmed on Wednesday (Jun 14). An Interpol spokesperson informed CNA that no notice or diffusion request regarding Chia had been received from Malaysia thus far.
The spokesperson emphasized that any request for assistance must adhere to Interpol’s Constitution, which prohibits involvement in religious, racial, military, or political activities. Furthermore, requests pertaining to offenses related to freedom of expression would be evaluated based on international human rights standards.
The spokesperson emphasized that requests failing to comply with the established rules or offense criteria would be declined.
Johor police confirmed on Wednesday that two reports have been received so far against stand-up comedian Jocelyn Chia for insulting and belittling Malaysia.
“An Interpol application was made on Tuesday to get more information related to the suspect to assist the investigation,” state police chief Kamarul Zaman Mamat said in a statement on Wednesday.
He said the investigation was being conducted in accordance with the legal provisions under Section 504/506(C) of the Penal Code. If convicted, offenders could be punished with a jail term of up to two years and a fine or both.
