15-9-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Scoring a coveted internship at a prestigious company is often seen as a significant career milestone for students. However, some individuals resort to dishonest means to secure such opportunities. A recent case in Malaysia exposed a man who had fabricated his qualifications and achievements to land an internship in a minister’s office, but he was swiftly exposed by vigilant netizens, resulting in the termination of his government internship and participation in a prominent youth fellowship program.
The saga began when an Instagram post by Malaysia’s Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz introduced Muhammad Azhar as one of the 56 Perdana Fellows for 2023, a prestigious youth fellowship program. The post also claimed that Azhar held a degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the University of Malaya (UM) and cited various notable achievements, including being the runner-up in the 2021 Microsoft Imagine Cup.
However, an internet search quickly revealed that two of these accolades had no qualifying Malaysian participants in the specified years, and the third achievement simply did not exist. Malaysia’s Bank Negara confirmed that there was no such award as ‘Best Delegate at the Bank Negara Fiscal Policy Summit 2021.’ Furthermore, it was discovered that Azhar’s claimed degree did not match any of UM’s engineering programs.

Following these revelations, the Perdana Fellows Alumni Association called for a thorough investigation and clarified that it lacked the authority to vet applicants. Instead, its primary role was to provide a community for program alumni.
Several Malaysian ministers, including Hannah Yeoh, head of the Youth and Sports Ministry, addressed the allegations. Yeoh revealed that one of Azhar’s certifications was inauthentic, leading to his removal from the Perdana Fellowship program. However, he would be offered counseling, and an investigation was promised to strengthen the program’s integrity.
Tengku Zafrul Aziz, the minister who initially welcomed Azhar into his office, removed the Instagram post featuring Azhar and acknowledged the matter on social media. He stated that his ministry and Yeoh’s were collaborating on the next steps.
This incident was not Azhar’s first involvement in a controversy. In 2020, news outlets reported that he had falsely claimed to receive a scholarship from the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Similar to the recent incident, his claims unraveled on social media, leading to national attention. Azhar later claimed that he had been deceived by “ambiguous emails from NUS.”
If the allegations are true, Azhar’s actions have raised concerns about the fairness of the education system and the opportunities available to deserving candidates.
Many hope that stringent selection processes will be implemented in such programs to prevent future incidents of this nature.
