6-9-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) A prominent seafood restaurant in Sabah, Malaysia, named “Jesselton Point Seafood Restaurant,” has been thrust into the spotlight after a family allegedly dined and dashed, leaving an outstanding bill of MYR 702 (approximately S$205), as reported by Malaysian media outlets.
The owner of the restaurant took to Facebook to recount the incident, which occurred on the evening of August 27 at 9:30 PM. According to the post, the family in question had dined at the establishment, ordering a variety of expensive seafood dishes. The total bill amounted to approximately MYR 1,102 (around S$321). However, the family considered the meal too costly and claimed to possess only slightly less than MYR 500 in cash. In an unexpected turn of events, they left without settling the bill, only paying MYR 400.
The restaurant, as a result, suffered a loss of approximately MYR 702.
The receipt uploaded by the restaurant revealed the family’s order, including a MYR 480 1-kilogram steamed lobster, an MYR 224 800-gram grouper, an MYR 230 1.8-kilogram salted egg fried crab, an MYR 28 portion of fried calamari rings, as well as three bowls of rice, coconut water, watermelon juice, cola, milk tea, and other beverages. The bill also included an additional MYR 100 for service charges, making the total MYR 1,102.02.
The restaurant emphasized that there is no excuse for not paying the full amount after placing an order. Consequently, they have requested that the customers in question settle the outstanding balance promptly. Additionally, the restaurant has released CCTV images of the diners, appealing to netizens for assistance in locating them.
As of September 2, the restaurant reported that the family had not returned to settle the remaining payment. Therefore, the restaurant decided to involve the authorities and urged the individuals involved to address the matter promptly.
Netizens have expressed widespread condemnation of the diners’ behavior, describing it as “irresponsible,” “shameless,” and “outrageous.” Some have even suggested that if the family found the restaurant’s prices too high, they should have expressed their concerns or lodged a complaint instead of failing to pay the bill, deeming it an act of dining and dashing.
