15-4-2024 (BEIJING) Indonesia’s badminton ace, Jonatan Christie, secured victory at the Badminton Asia Championships on Sunday, triumphing over Li Shi Feng in a thrilling final held in Ningbo, China.
In a display of remarkable skill and determination, Christie outplayed the home favourite, Li, with a convincing scoreline of 21-15, 21-16, clinching the coveted championship crown.
Meanwhile, in the women’s singles category, China’s Wang Zhi Yi emerged victorious after defeating her compatriot, Chen Yu Fei, in straight sets with a score of 21-19, 21-7.
Wang’s triumph followed a surprising upset in the quarter-finals, where South Korea’s world number one, An Se-young, was ousted by China’s He Bingjiao. Despite this setback, An remains a frontrunner for the gold medal at the upcoming Paris Olympics, although she has been grappling with a knee injury.
The men’s doubles title was fiercely contested, ultimately being claimed by the Chinese duo of Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang. They overcame Malaysian pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin in a thrilling encounter, securing victory with a scoreline of 21-17, 15-21, 21-10.
On the women’s doubles front, South Korean partners Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee emerged triumphant, defeating China’s Zhang Shu Xian and Zheng Yu with a score of 23-21, 21-12.
In the mixed doubles category, China’s Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping staged a remarkable comeback to secure victory over the South Korean world champions, Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung. They clinched the title with a thrilling 13-21, 21-15, 21-14 victory.
