23-5-2024 (JAKARTA) Indonesian customs officials at Yogyakarta Airport on Java Island intercepted an attempt to smuggle 80,000 lobster larvae to Malaysia on the 14th of this month.
The incident came to light when an AirAsia passenger’s two carry-on bags were found to contain the lobster larvae. According to a statement by Education and Information Services Chief Riri on Thursday, customs officials, airport security, and the Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center, along with AirAsia staff, conducted an investigation and physical inspection. They discovered 40 plastic bags containing a total of 80,000 lobster larvae.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, the authorities promptly transferred the seized larvae to the Yogyakarta Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center. Subsequently, the larvae were released into the waters at Pantai Baru in Bantul.
