30-12-2024 (KAGOSHIMA) A 19-year-old Indonesian nurse has been arrested in southern Japan following the death of her newborn daughter in what authorities are treating as a suspected homicide.
The woman, who had arrived in Japan just four months prior, was taken into custody by Kagoshima Chuo Police on Christmas Day in connection with the death of her infant at a care facility where she worked as a nurse.
According to police reports, the tragic sequence of events began on 20 December when colleagues discovered the suspect in distress in a second-floor lavatory of the nursing home. Her newborn child was found on the ground outside the building.
Emergency services were immediately summoned, and both mother and child were rushed to hospital with signs of life. However, the infant’s condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to her death two days later on 22 December.
Post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death as multiple organ failure resulting from severe head trauma, prompting hospital officials to alert law enforcement.
During questioning, the suspect, who cannot be named for legal reasons, acknowledged giving birth but claimed to have no recollection of subsequent events. “I’m certain I delivered a baby girl, but everything after that is blank,” she told investigators, according to the Yomiuri newspaper.
The accused has denied allegations of violence against the infant. Kagoshima Chuo Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
