14-6-2024 (JAKARTA) A shocking case of domestic violence has emerged from Indonesia, where a policewoman allegedly set her husband on fire after a heated argument over his gambling addiction. The tragic incident, which took place on June 8th, has left the nation reeling and sparked discussions about the societal impact of gambling and the importance of seeking professional help to address marital conflicts.
According to reports from CNN Indonesia and Tempo, the couple at the center of the tragedy were identified as 28-year-old Brigadier Fadhilatun Nikmah and her 27-year-old husband, Brigadier Rian Dwi Wicaksono. Rian, a member of the Indonesian police force, had developed a habit of squandering his earnings on online gambling, a behavior that had reportedly strained their relationship.
On the fateful day, Fadhilatun returned to their home at a police dormitory with a bottle of gasoline. She reportedly sent a photo of the bottle to Rian, along with a chilling threat to burn their three children if he failed to come home. In a disturbing turn of events, she instructed the babysitter to take the children out to play, setting the stage for the horrific act that would follow.

Upon Rian’s return, Fadhilatun confronted him about his squandering of his 13th-month bonus salary, worth approximately 2.8 million rupiah (around S$231). Rian had reportedly wasted the majority of the money on online gambling, leaving only 800,000 rupiah (around S$66) remaining.
As tensions escalated, an argument erupted between the couple. In a fit of rage, Fadhilatun handcuffed Rian to a folding ladder in the garage and doused him with gasoline before igniting a match, setting him ablaze.
Rian’s agonizing screams alerted neighbors, and one brave individual rushed to the scene, attempting to extinguish the flames. However, the fire had already inflicted severe burns on 96% of Rian’s body. Despite being rushed to a hospital in East Java for intensive treatment, Rian tragically succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, June 9th, at 12:55 p.m.
The horrific incident has left the local community and the Indonesian police force in shock. Fadhilatun is currently being detained at an Integrated Service Centre, according to the Head of Public Relations of the East Java Regional Police, Dirmanto. Authorities have cited the need to provide care for her three young children, all under the age of five, as a factor in her detention at the service centre rather than a traditional detention facility.
