5-12-2023 (JAKARTA) The Indonesian government is taking steps to develop sustainable tourism and attract more visitors by establishing a tourism fund, according to Indonesian Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno. The fund, set to be launched in early 2024, will initially manage 2 trillion rupiahs (equivalent to 129.3 million U.S. dollars) to support the promotion of tourism events and enhance Indonesia’s tourism branding on the global stage.
Minister Sandiaga Uno stated on Monday that the fund would be utilized to support both national and international events, including sports, music, cultural arts, and high-level summits, to be held in Indonesia. He emphasized that even events not directly related to tourism, such as international conferences, have significant economic impacts. The aim is to leverage these events to boost the tourism sector and contribute to the post-COVID recovery.
Indonesia is planning to host at least three international-scale events in 2024, including the BWF Badminton World Tour-Indonesia Masters, the 10th World Water Forum, and the Indonesia MotoGP in Mandalika. These events are expected to attract global attention and contribute to the revitalization of Indonesia’s tourism industry, which has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Indonesia has seen positive tourism performance. According to the Indonesia Statistics (BPS), from January to October, the country recorded 9.49 million tourist arrivals, surpassing the government’s target of 7.4 million set at the beginning of the year. This encouraging data indicates the resilience of Indonesia’s tourism sector and its potential for growth.
