23-8-2023 (JAKARTA) The Indonesian Embassy in Port Moresby has facilitated the repatriation of 28 Indonesian fishermen from the KMN Sanjaya 108 ship, who were arrested for illegal entry and illegal fishing (IUU fishing) in the waters of Papua New Guinea (PNG).
These fishermen were safely repatriated on a direct flight from Port Moresby to Denpasar on Sunday, August 20, 2023, according to a statement from the embassy received on Monday.
Indonesian Ambassador to PNG, Andriana Supandi, highlighted the strict enforcement of laws related to IUU fishing in PNG and the absence of appropriate detention facilities. He urged Indonesian fishermen not to engage in fishing activities without the necessary permits in Papua New Guinean waters.
The KMN Sanjaya 108 ship, with a capacity of 150 gross tonnage (GT), was apprehended in PNG waters on June 6, 2023, for allegedly violating territorial boundaries and engaging in illegal fishing. Prior to its capture, the ship had caught 49 tons of fish.
This case was one of the most high-profile instances of IUU fishing in PNG waters. The entire crew of the Sanjaya 108 ship underwent legal proceedings in PNG, resulting in fines and subsidiary prison terms.
The Indonesian Embassy in Port Moresby was deeply involved in managing the KMN Sanjaya ship case from the moment they received information about the arrest. They provided assistance and translation services during the legal proceedings, offered logistical support, and visited the correctional institution.
The embassy also encouraged the ship’s company to provide legal services and take responsibility for the legal consequences imposed by the PNG courts. The company demonstrated its willingness to pay fines and finance the repatriation process for the 28 Indonesian fishermen.
The statement emphasized the commitment of the Indonesian embassy in Port Moresby, along with related ministries and institutions, to enhance awareness and understanding among Indonesian fishermen. Additionally, they aim to improve the regulation and supervision of Indonesian fishermen’s activities in the border areas between Indonesia and PNG.
