16-8-2023 (JAKARTA) Responding to the alarming surge in air pollution that has shrouded Jakarta in a haze, the Indonesian government is rallying its citizens to embrace electric vehicles (EVs) as a crucial step towards embracing greener energy sources. This urgent call for transition comes in the wake of Indonesian Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir’s assertion that the recent air pollution, labeled as the worst in the country’s history, is primarily attributed to emissions from vehicles, industries, and power generation facilities.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Minister Thohir emphasized the pressing need for a transformative shift towards environmentally friendly energy solutions. Speaking at a virtual seminar, he stressed the government’s resolve to steer away from conventional fuel vehicles in favor of electric alternatives, asserting that such a transition is an indispensable part of the remedy.
The deteriorating air quality in Jakarta and its neighboring cities over the past week has thrust the issue into the spotlight. President Joko Widodo has affirmed that the air quality index in the capital reached a concerning level of 156, categorizing it as “very unhealthy” as of August 13. President Widodo pinpointed coal consumption as the primary contributor to the city’s compromised air quality.
Minister Thohir, cognizant of the scale of change required, underscored that a shift in mindset is imperative. He underscored the significance of adopting electric-powered motorbikes and cars as a feasible starting point for this transition. He urged the population to adjust their routines and embrace these sustainable alternatives to conventional vehicles.
