7-1-2025 (SAO PAULO) Indonesia has officially become the newest member of BRICS, marking another milestone in the expansion of the influential emerging economies alliance, Brazil’s government announced today.
The Southeast Asian powerhouse, boasting the world’s fourth-largest population, received unanimous approval from existing members, completing a membership process that began during the group’s watershed 2023 summit in South Africa. The formal accession follows Indonesia’s recent political transition, with President Prabowo Subianto assuming office in October 2024.
Brazil, currently holding the BRICS presidency for 2025, welcomed Indonesia’s entry, highlighting the new member’s alignment with the bloc’s vision for reforming global governance structures. “Indonesia’s incorporation strengthens our collective voice in advocating for a more equitable international order,” stated Brazilian officials in their formal announcement.
The addition of Indonesia to BRICS, which already counts Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa among its founding members, further amplifies the group’s economic and diplomatic clout. The bloc underwent significant expansion in 2023, bringing Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates into its fold.
