19-2-2024 (JAKARTA) Indonesia is contemplating additional incentives to lure music, sports, and cultural events, aiming to draw travellers who would contribute to extended stays and increased spending in the country.
Tourism Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno has proposed a concept he terms ‘Swiftonomics’ for Indonesian tourism, inspired by neighbouring Singapore’s success in hosting Taylor Swift’s upcoming concert, expected to attract visitors from the region. To support this initiative, the government has established a 1 trillion rupiah ($64 million) tourism fund, dedicated to bidding for and hosting major events.
As Southeast Asia’s largest economy, Indonesia plans to expand visa exemptions for more nationalities and streamline permit processes, making it more convenient for the country to host a diverse range of events. Simultaneously, a new visitor levy for Bali is being introduced to generate funds aimed at safeguarding the tropical island from the adverse effects of tourism.
These strategic measures have already shown promise, with the number of foreign tourists reaching 1.1 million in December, nearing pre-pandemic figures.
“I am very optimistic that with some of our transformations in tourism, we will be able to achieve better results in the coming year,” stated Uno during an interview with Bloomberg TV’s Haslinda Amin on Monday.
The recent peaceful elections in Indonesia, notable for a history of violent demonstrations, could potentially open the door to increased tourism in the world’s largest archipelago. As the country awaits official election results, following unofficial quick counts pointing to Prabowo Subianto as the next president, Uno remains optimistic about the post-election scenario.
“I am optimistic that after the results are announced, everyone will support it,” Uno added, anticipating a positive impact on the tourism landscape.
