9-1-2025 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has revealed that Indonesia has committed to supporting Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN throughout this year, following talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
The pledge emerged during an intimate luncheon meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, where both leaders engaged in comprehensive discussions about regional cooperation. Despite President Subianto’s formal state visit being scheduled for 27 January, he opted for an earlier informal meeting, underlining the close personal rapport between the two leaders.
Speaking to journalists at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s Bunga Raya Complex, Prime Minister Anwar, who also holds the Finance portfolio, emphasised the significance of the impromptu visit. “Our longstanding friendship prompted President Subianto to arrange this early meeting for a candid discussion on matters of mutual concern,” the Premier explained.
Malaysia has officially taken the helm of ASEAN this month, championing the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” The Indonesian leader’s gesture of support marks a promising start to Malaysia’s chairmanship, potentially strengthening the regional bloc’s cohesion.
