11-7-2023 (JAKARTA) Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi emphasized the significance of the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) in reaffirming ASEAN’s role as a contributor to peace and stability in the region.
According to Retno, the peace and stability maintained for over five decades have brought prosperity to Southeast Asia. The region’s economic growth has consistently outpaced global growth, and this progress and prosperity can only be achieved through peace and stability—something that ASEAN has successfully realized thus far. Retno expressed these views during her visit to the AMM 2023 media center in Jakarta on Monday.
The AMM, followed by meetings between ASEAN foreign ministers and dialogue partners, is being held in Jakarta from July 10th to 14th, 2023. The event consists of a total of 18 meetings, including discussions on the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ), a meeting with the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), the AMM plenary session, and a retreat session.
Subsequently, the foreign ministers will hold meetings with ASEAN’s dialogue partners, including India, New Zealand, Russia, Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, as well as the ASEAN Plus Three (APT) countries. Additionally, there will be meetings for the East Asia Summit (EAS) and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
The series of events will be attended by at least 1,165 delegates and 493 journalists from both domestic and international media.
As the chair of ASEAN this year, Indonesia has set the theme “ASEAN Matters: Epicenter of Growth,” with a focus on strengthening ASEAN’s relevance in responding to regional and global challenges, as well as enhancing its position as the economic growth center in the region.
