21-7-2023 (NEW DELHI) Chaos ensued in both houses of the Indian parliament on Friday for the second consecutive day as lawmakers from opposition parties staged protests over the escalating situation in the strife-torn state of Manipur.
The ongoing monsoon session of the Indian parliament witnessed heated sloganeering and disruptions as opposition lawmakers raised their voices in concern over the Manipur violence.
In the Lok Sabha, members of various opposition parties, including the Congress party, gathered in the well of the house, raising slogans and demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the situation in Manipur.
In response to the mounting tensions, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the government was prepared to engage in a discussion on the incidents occurring in Manipur. However, he pointed out that the opposition did not seem to approach the matter with the required seriousness.
The northeastern state of Manipur has been grappling with unrest since May 3 when widespread violence erupted during a tribal protest against the inclusion of the non-tribal Meiteis community in the scheduled tribe status category. The designation of “scheduled tribe” is typically reserved for disadvantaged socio-economic groups, granting them educational and job reservations within the government.
The ongoing violence in Manipur has resulted in a staggering toll, with 142 lives lost, over 3,000 people injured, and approximately 60,000 individuals displaced from their homes.
