16-6-2023 (KIEV) Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), arrived at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) in Ukraine on Thursday, according to a post on state-run nuclear energy operator Energoatom’s Telegram account.
Originally scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Grossi’s visit was delayed for security reasons, according to Ukraine’s Energy Minister German Galushchenko.
Grossi’s visit to ZNPP is to assess the situation after the Kakhovka dam breach, which occurred on June 6. Ukraine and Russia have been trading accusations over the attack on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam.
The ZNPP, which has been controlled by Russian forces since March 2022, is located approximately 140 km northeast of the Kakhovka plant.
The ZNPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and the fifth-largest in the world. Its pressurized water reactors generate approximately 40% of Ukraine’s electricity.
