4-7-2023 (TOKYO) The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, visited Japan on Tuesday to submit the IAEA’s safety report on the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Grossi held a press conference in the afternoon, stating that the IAEA believes that the plan to discharge Fukushima nuclear wastewater meets international safety standards.
The Japanese government has been planning to discharge the contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the Pacific Ocean, which has raised concerns from neighbouring countries. The IAEA conducted a safety review of the plan and concluded that it met international safety standards. Grossi said that the discharge would not pose a risk to human health and the environment if carried out according to the plan’s requirements.
The Japanese government has agreed to allow IAEA personnel to permanently stay in Fukushima for monitoring. Grossi will handle related matters in Fukushima on Wednesday.
