13-6-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) “I genuinely hope Jocelyn Chia doesn’t need to apologize for this fantastic joke,” said American comedian Chrissie Mayr on Twitter. She emphasized that the role of a stand-up comedian is not to shy away from sensitive topics but to create laughter, without the need for apologies.
Her statement caused a major uproar, with many Malaysians flooding her social media to condemn her. However, Mayr remains unfazed by the backlash. “Malaysians are now criticizing me on Twitter for supporting Jocelyn and her jokes. Is the lack of a sense of humor a cultural trait? I genuinely ask,” she remarked.
It’s not the comedian’s job to avoid certain topics that trigger the sensitive- it’s their job to be funny.

Mayr even responded to Malaysian netizens attacking her content and continued to ride the wave of controversy by mocking Malaysians. For instance, upon seeing a Malaysian netizen’s response of “Basuh Berak dulu baru sembang” (which roughly translates to “Wash poop first before chatting”), Mayr used a translation tool and came up with the interpretation of “Wash poop first before chatting,” using it to ridicule Malaysians. She commented, “Do Malaysians wash their own poop? That explains a lot.”
Even when some netizens pointed out that it was a translation error, Mayr continued to mock. Some netizens saw through her intentions and advised Malaysian netizens to refrain from further engagement, so as not to contribute to her gaining more attention.
