20-9-2023 (YANGON) The husband of a Myanmar woman has taken legal action against his wife on four charges after she allegedly coerced their daughter into becoming a sex worker. The wife, employed as a cleaner at a resort in Saraburi Province, central Thailand, is accused of engaging in prostitution herself and forcing their 15-year-old daughter, as well as other women, to provide sexual services to resort guests.
U Moe Gyo, the chairman of the Joint Action Committee for Burmese Affairs (JACBA), confirmed that an investigation has been launched against the woman on four counts, which include illegal border crossing, forcing her underage daughter into prostitution, and subjecting children to torment.
“The woman is facing four criminal charges. The first is illegal border crossing, for which there is no documentary evidence. The second charge pertains to child rights, specifically torture and child prostitution,” explained U Moe Gyo.
If convicted, the woman could face a prison sentence ranging from 12 to 15 years for the charges related to child rights. Additionally, under immigration law, she could be sentenced to six months or up to one year in prison.
