5-11-2023 (HAMBURG) An 18-hour hostage situation at Hamburg airport has come to a close, with the suspect and his daughter peacefully exiting their car, as reported by the police. This ordeal had forced the closure of northern Germany’s busiest airport.
The suspect was apprehended without offering any resistance, and the child did not appear to have suffered any injuries, according to a statement from the police on the social media platform X.
The incident commenced at approximately 8 pm local time on Saturday when an armed individual breached a security barrier and accessed the tarmac. He fired two shots into the air and hurled two burning bottles from his vehicle. Police noted that at least two individuals, including a child, were inside the car. The driver’s wife had alerted the authorities by making an emergency call, reporting the abduction of her child.
On Saturday, the police had indicated their belief that a custody dispute was at the heart of this operation.
On Sunday morning, a police spokesperson informed German media, “We have good contact with the perpetrator.” The police expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations, characterizing the extended discussions as a positive sign.
The incident resulted in delays that affected a total of 3,200 airline passengers, according to local media reports.
