3-7-2024 (JAKARTA) A 30-year-old woman met a gruesome fate after being swallowed whole by a massive python. The tragedy, which occurred in Siteba village, marks the second such incident in the region within a month, raising concerns about human-wildlife conflict in the area.
Siriati, the victim, had left her home on Tuesday morning to purchase medicine for her ailing child. When she failed to return, her worried family initiated a search. The grim discovery was made by her husband, Adiansa, who stumbled upon her slippers and trousers approximately 500 metres from their residence.
Local police chief Idul recounted the chilling moment of discovery: “Shortly after finding her belongings, Adiansa spotted a snake about 10 metres from the path. The python was still alive at that point.” The village secretary, Iyang, added that Adiansa’s suspicions were aroused by the python’s unnaturally distended belly.
In a desperate attempt to confirm their worst fears, villagers gathered to assist Adiansa in cutting open the snake’s stomach, where they made the horrifying discovery of Siriati’s body.
While such incidents are considered extremely rare, this is not an isolated case in the region. Just last month, another woman fell victim to a reticulated python in a different district of South Sulawesi. The province has witnessed several similar tragedies in recent years, including the death of a farmer who was found being constricted and consumed by an 8-metre python in 2023.
