25-1-2025 (HONG KONG) A 29-year-old Hong Kong resident, who fell victim to human trafficking and was forced into illegal work at a scam operation in Myanmar, is scheduled to return home on Monday, Security Secretary Chris Tang Ping-keung announced today.
Speaking during a radio broadcast, Tang revealed that the victim, who has been successfully extracted to Thailand, is in stable condition both mentally and physically. Members of the specially formed government task force will accompany him on his journey back to Hong Kong.
The rescue marks a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to address the plight of Hong Kong citizens trapped in Southeast Asian human trafficking operations. Currently, ten other Hong Kong residents remain detained in similar circumstances across the region.
The Security Secretary acknowledged that civil unrest in various parts of Southeast Asia has complicated rescue efforts. “We’re navigating complex territorial challenges, but our commitment remains unwavering,” Tang explained.
In pursuit of diplomatic solutions, Tang has engaged in discussions with both Myanmar and Cambodian consular officials in Hong Kong. “There’s been productive dialogue with both consul generals, and alongside Thai authorities, we’re all working tirelessly to secure the safe return of our citizens,” he stated.
The successful rescue operation was facilitated by crucial support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, enabling the victim to reunite with his family ahead of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
A dedicated government task force has been operating in Thailand, investigating numerous reports of Hong Kong citizens who were deceived with false promises and subsequently held against their will in various Southeast Asian nations.
