22-7-2023 (TOKYO) Hong Kong has begun implementing stricter radiation inspections on seafood imports from Japan, according to a report by Kyodo news agency on Saturday. The move follows concerns raised by Hong Kong on Friday over Japan’s planned release of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean.
The tighter inspections started in mid-June and have resulted in customs clearance delays of up to three hours for Japanese seafood. The new measures are designed to ensure that seafood from Japan does not contain any radioactive substances that may be harmful to public health.
The Japanese government has confirmed that some shipments of Japanese seafood have been held up at China’s customs. The move by Hong Kong is part of a wider trend of countries taking precautions against any potential health risks associated with seafood from Japan.
