19-10-2023 (HONG KONG) Speculation about the romantic involvement between Hong Kong singer-actress Gillian Chung and Chinese influencer Sam Huangpu has been fueled by a recent Instagram post. Chung shared a selfie with Huangpu, accompanied by a “Happy Birthday” caption, leading netizens to interpret the photo as an official declaration of their relationship. Rumors of their connection have been circulating since June, with some netizens even comparing Huangpu to Chung’s ex-boyfriend, Edison Chen.
The photo, in which both individuals posed cheek-to-cheek while their cheeks were held by a pair of hands, presumably belonging to Chung, stirred curiosity among fans. Hong Kong media reported previous instances of the pair being spotted together, behaving intimately. Furthermore, Chung and Huangpu were coincidentally in Phuket, Thailand at the same time, although they did not share any photos together, leaving room for further speculation.
Netizens expressed a range of reactions to Chung’s Instagram post. Some remained skeptical, while others exhibited bitterness or offered their support. Observing the resemblance between Huangpu and the Hong Kong singer-actor Edison Chen, one commenter remarked, “You have lived nearly half your life, yet you still could not escape from Edison.”
In a sarcastic tone, another person remarked, “I can forget it if your taste in men is bad, but your taste in women is similar, so I don’t know what to think.” A bitter comment expressed concern for Chung’s fans, accusing her of having a hardened heart. However, some netizens defended Chung’s alleged choice, questioning the critics’ right to comment and emphasizing the importance of personal choices in the present era.
Responding to the comments, Chung wrote ambiguously, “Hahaha, don’t worry, I still love my Ah Sa (Charlene Choi) the most,” accompanied by three laugh-crying emojis. Charlene Choi and Gillian Chung are both members of the popular Cantopop girl duo, Twins.
With approximately 2.3 million followers on Weibo, Huangpu is known for her affluent background and regularly showcases her luxurious lifestyle on social media. She is also close friends with Grace Chow, another Chinese influencer who was previously in a relationship with Taiwanese singer Show Lo.
