26-8-2023 (HONG KONG) Chris Tang Ping-keung, the Secretary for Security, is set to embark on a diplomatic visit to Hanoi, Vietnam, and Singapore, in an effort to enhance regional partnerships and foster collaboration on various security-related matters. The visit, which begins on August 27th and concludes on August 31st, will mark an important step in strengthening ties between Hong Kong and its neighboring countries.
Upon arrival in Vietnam, Tang will engage in discussions with high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Immigration Departments of Hong Kong and Vietnam. This agreement will aim to bolster operational cooperation and facilitate exchanges of expertise in the realm of immigration. Tang will also hold meetings with representatives from the Department of External Security, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Foreign Relations under the MPS, solidifying ties between the two nations.
In Singapore, Tang will visit the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Manpower, in addition to interacting with various agencies falling under the MHA’s purview, such as the Singapore Police Force, the Internal Security Department, and the Prison Service. The agenda also includes visits to the National Security Coordination Secretariat and the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore, highlighting the importance of cybersecurity in today’s interconnected world. Furthermore, Tang will meet with representatives from Interpol in Singapore, emphasizing the significance of international cooperation in combating crime.
Tang’s visit will not only focus on official engagements but also on connecting with the Hong Kong communities residing in Vietnam and Singapore. This will help strengthen the bonds between Hong Kong and its diaspora abroad.
The Secretary for Security will be accompanied by Mr. Au Ka-wang, the Director of Immigration, during his visit to Vietnam, while Mr. Wong Kwok-hing, the Commissioner of Correctional Services, will join part of the visit to Singapore. Their presence underscores the collaborative nature of the trip, with different departments coming together to explore opportunities for cooperation.
During Tang’s absence, Mr. Michael Cheuk, the Under Secretary for Security, will assume the role of Acting Secretary for Security, ensuring the continuity of operations and maintaining stability within the department.
