21-5-2023 (HONG KONG) In a bid to strengthen ties with the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, John Lee, is set to lead a high-level delegation to Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. This strategic move aims to foster closer collaboration between Hong Kong and ASEAN nations across various sectors.
The delegation, comprising senior government officials and representatives from key industries such as finance, technology, and professional services, underscores Hong Kong’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation. By engaging with ASEAN member countries, the city hopes to tap into the vast opportunities presented by this dynamic economic bloc.
One of Hong Kong’s primary objectives is to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP), which stands as the world’s largest free trade agreement based on the combined GDP of its member nations. With ASEAN nations, China, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Japan already part of the pact, Hong Kong seeks to secure inclusion in this influential trade agreement. China has been actively rallying support from other nations for Hong Kong’s participation, recognizing the city’s vital role in regional commerce.
