29-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Richard Li, a billionaire from Hong Kong, has donated around RM900,000 to a fund that aids Malaysian students studying in Hong Kong, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Loke expressed his gratitude to Li at a business luncheon with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, where he called the donation a reflection of Malaysia and Hong Kong’s strong trade ties.
The fund is set up by the Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and has raised RM9.1mil from donations over the past few years. Scholarships to cover living expenses have been awarded to 130 Malaysian students, and HK$10mil (RM5.8mil) has already been disbursed to the students.
Li, who is known for his philanthropy, is the chairman and CEO of the private investment group Pacific Century Group, which is the parent company of telco group PCCW. Forbes listed Li’s net worth at US$4.7bil (RM21.4bil) this year, ranking him 20th on their list of the richest people in Hong Kong.
