7-11-2023 (LOS ANGELES) The ongoing strike by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has entered its fourth month, with the union responding to the latest offer from major studios and streaming services. In a note posted on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), SAG-AFTRA stated that there are still unresolved issues between the two parties, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
The union’s negotiating committee remains determined to secure a favorable agreement and bring an end to the strike in a responsible manner. With the entertainment industry at a critical juncture, SAG-AFTRA emphasized the need for a fair contract that ensures the viability of careers in the present and future.
The strike, which began in July, was called by SAG-AFTRA members to demand higher compensation in the streaming TV era and safeguards regarding the use of AI, among other concerns.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), representing companies such as Walt Disney and Netflix, presented what the studios referred to as their “last, best, and final” offer on November 4.
Netflix Co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, confirmed in an interview with Reuters on Monday that negotiations were ongoing. Sarandos stated that the company is actively engaged in discussions and striving to reach a resolution, emphasizing their commitment to getting the industry back to work. He made these comments during an event at the recently restored Hollywood landmark, the Egyptian Theatre, which was undertaken by Netflix.
Sarandos expressed the company’s dedication to storytelling and their desire to resume production for their fans. Netflix is working tirelessly to restore operations and ensure the output of quality content.
While union leaders expressed cautious optimism last week regarding the possibility of reaching a deal soon, they also acknowledged the existence of gaps between the two sides on various issues. One specific concern relates to AI, with actors seeking guarantees that their digital likenesses will not be used without their explicit permission.
