17-8-2023 (YANGON) H&M, the world’s second-largest fashion retailer, has announced its intention to cease sourcing from Myanmar gradually. The decision comes in response to mounting reports of labor abuses within the country’s garment factories, as confirmed by H&M in a statement to Reuters on Thursday.
H&M joins a growing list of brands, including Inditex (owner of Zara), Primark, and Marks & Spencer, that have severed ties with suppliers in Myanmar due to concerns over labor conditions.
In an email response to Reuters, H&M explained its rationale behind the decision, stating, “After careful consideration, we have now taken the decision to gradually phase out our operations in Myanmar. We have been closely monitoring the latest developments in Myanmar and have observed increased challenges in conducting our operations in line with our standards and requirements.”
