26-12-2023 (HANOI) Hanoi, the vibrant capital of Vietnam, has witnessed a remarkable surge in tourism, welcoming an estimated 24 million visitors this year, as reported by the municipal Tourism Department. The figures indicate an extraordinary annual increase of 27%, reflecting the city’s growing appeal as a tourist destination.
Foreign visitors contributed significantly to this surge, reaching 4 million and marking an astonishing 266.7% year-on-year growth. The remaining arrivals consisted of domestic tourists, showcasing a commendable yearly rise of 16.3%.
The total tourism revenue for the year is estimated at 87.65 trillion VND (US$3.65 billion), demonstrating a substantial 45.5% increase compared to the previous year.
Dang Huong Giang, the Director of the Tourism Department, underscored the sector’s commitment to crafting tours and tourism products rooted in traditional cultural values. The introduction of 15 enticing night tourism products received positive feedback from tourists, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
The department implemented various programmes to strengthen its tourism offerings, focusing on culinary experiences, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and health care tourism. Collaborating with districts, suburban areas, and travel agencies, the sector introduced new experiential tours linked with heritage sites, relic locations, and craft villages. River tourism products were also developed to connect tourist destinations along the Red and Duong Rivers.
In recognition of its efforts, Hanoi received several prestigious accolades from the World Travel Awards, including “Leading City Destination in Asia,” “Leading City Break Destination in Asia,” and “Leading Tourist Board in Asia.” The city also secured its inaugural award as the “World’s Best Golf Destination” from the World Golf Awards.
Hanoi takes pride in having 48 out of 103 Michelin Guide-selected restaurants, with three achieving Michelin one-star status. TripAdvisor ranked Hanoi 17th out of 25 renowned travel destinations and third among the top 20 culinary destinations for food enthusiasts.
Looking ahead to 2024, Giang outlined the city’s ambitious goals, aiming to serve approximately 26.5 million tourists, reflecting a 10.4% annual increase. This target includes hosting 5 million foreign tourists and 21.5 million domestic tourists, representing respective year-on-year rises of 25% and 7.5%. The total revenue is projected to increase by 13.8% annually, reaching approximately 99.77 trillion VND.
