27-2-2025 (HANOI) Hanoi has emerged as one of the world’s most severely polluted metropolitan centres, with air quality readings reaching precarious levels. The Vietnamese capital registered an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 196 during the early morning hours of 27 February, placing it second globally for atmospheric pollution.
The situation showed marginal improvement by mid-morning, though the city still maintained its position amongst the world’s most polluted urban areas, with the AQI slightly declining to 191. Most worryingly, the concentration of PM2.5 particles has soared to 22.5 times above the World Health Organization’s recommended annual guidelines.
Health authorities have issued comprehensive advisory measures in response to the deteriorating air quality. The Ministry of Health’s Department of Environment Management strongly urges residents to exercise caution, particularly during periods when the AQI exceeds 151. The general public is advised to minimise outdoor activities and opt for public transportation wherever possible.
For vulnerable individuals, including those with respiratory conditions, health officials advocate strictly indoor activities and careful management of ventilation, especially for properties situated near high-traffic zones or industrial areas.
The meteorological outlook presents a mixed picture across the region. The Northwest territories are experiencing variable conditions, with localised rainfall and morning fog giving way to afternoon sunshine. Temperatures are expected to range from a brisk 14°C to a moderate 27°C in certain areas.
Meanwhile, Hanoi itself remains under the influence of cool weather patterns, with forecasts indicating temperatures between 16°C and 21°C. The city’s residents face a combination of morning drizzle and scattered fog, though partial clearing is anticipated during afternoon hours.
The Northeast region mirrors similar weather patterns, with scattered precipitation and morning mist gradually yielding to clearer afternoon skies. Temperature variations span from 14°C in mountainous areas to a maximum of 21°C, maintaining the notably cool conditions across the region.
