18-10-2024 (GAZA) Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar met his end during a precision operation carried out by Israeli paratroopers in the Gaza Strip. The demise of Sinwar, dubbed the “mastermind” behind the devastating 7th October 2023 attack on Israel, marks a significant moment in the ongoing conflict that has engulfed the region for over a year.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the killing, describing it as a severe blow to “evil” and heralding it as the “beginning of the end” of the protracted struggle. The operation, executed by Israel Defense Forces (IDF), was captured on drone footage, showing Sinwar’s final moments as he futilely attempted to fend off the approaching drone by hurling debris.
The October 2023 attack, which Hamas was held responsible for, resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 people and the abduction of 250 hostages, according to Israeli government figures. This act of aggression not only intensified the conflict in Gaza but also led to increased tensions spilling over into neighbouring Lebanon.
IDF International Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani released the footage of the operation, prompting swift reactions from Israelis who branded Sinwar’s last actions as “pathetic”. The visual evidence of the Hamas leader’s demise has been met with a mix of relief and renewed determination among the Israeli populace.

During a televised address, Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasised the gravity of the moment, stating, “Today, we have showcased the repercussions for those who seek to harm us. This is the outcome they face. The forces of good always prevail over those of evil and darkness.” He went on to acknowledge the ongoing challenges, calling for national resilience and unity in the face of continued conflict.
Netanyahu also reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to pursuing military operations, declaring, “We shall not halt the conflict. We will advance into Rafah.” This statement suggests that despite this significant victory, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza is far from over.
