2-1-2024 (NEW DELHI) Tragic violence unfolded in India’s northeastern state of Manipur as gunmen dressed in camouflage fatigues unleashed a deadly attack on villagers, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals and leaving five others gravely injured, according to officials on Tuesday. The region has been grappling with sporadic outbreaks of violence.
Since May, a fierce conflict between the Meitei majority and the Kuki minority communities has claimed the lives of approximately 180 people, following a court ruling that recommended extending privileges granted to the Kukis to the Meiteis as well.
The recent wave of violence erupted in the Lilong area of Thoubal district on Monday, when a group of assailants dressed in camouflage opened fire indiscriminately on local residents.
A senior police official confirmed that three individuals lost their lives due to gunshot wounds, while five others were admitted to the hospital with multiple injuries.
Currently, there is no available information regarding the identities of the victims or the suspected identities of the attackers.
In response to the escalating situation, authorities have reinstated an indefinite curfew in Thoubal district and four neighboring districts, including Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, and Bishnupur, since Monday night.
Manipur, which shares a border with Myanmar, is one of the smallest states in India with a population of 3.2 million people. Among its residents, 16% are Kukis, who predominantly reside in the hills and enjoy economic benefits, as well as government job quotas and educational opportunities. On the other hand, the Meiteis, who make up 53% of the population, control the more prosperous lowland areas.
