9-2-2025 (SELANGOR) Local authorities have launched a manhunt for a gunman who terrorised shoppers at a Setia Alam shopping centre on Saturday evening, firing multiple shots and leaving two people injured before making his escape.
According to Selangor Police Chief Commissioner Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, the suspect, identified as a local man in his 30s with 11 previous criminal convictions, opened fire at approximately 10 PM, initially targeting a foreign maintenance worker who was storing cleaning supplies. The worker sustained gunshot wounds to his leg and buttocks and was subsequently rushed to Shah Alam Hospital for treatment.
The assailant then proceeded to the mall’s P2 level, where he discharged several rounds at a sliding door before moving to the car park. In a series of increasingly desperate actions, the gunman attempted to commandeer vehicles from mall patrons, firing at one motorist who refused to stop. The bullet struck the fleeing vehicle, and the driver later filed a police report.
The suspect eventually succeeded in forcing another motorist to drive him away from the scene, demanding to be dropped off near the Pandamaran exit of the Kesas Expressway.
“Our forensic team has recovered more than ten bullet casings from various locations within the mall, including the stairwell and parking areas,” Commissioner Hussein reported. “While initial investigations suggest this incident was not linked to a goldsmith robbery, we are not dismissing any possibilities at this stage.”
Shah Alam OCPD Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim has assured the public that the mall has been thoroughly searched and declared safe for normal operations. “Our teams have conducted a comprehensive review of CCTV footage and implemented a thorough sweep of the surrounding areas,” he stated.
