7-3-2024 (PHILADELPHIA) Eight high school students in Philadelphia were wounded by gunshots while waiting to board a city bus after classes on Wednesday. This marks the fourth shooting on the city’s transit system in as many days, with the previous three incidents each resulting in fatalities.
According to police reports, the students from Northeast High School, aged between 15 and 17, were waiting for the bus around 3 p.m. when three suspects jumped from a car and unleashed more than 30 shots. The suspects, who had been waiting at the scene in their vehicle, opened fire on the unsuspecting students.
Philadelphia’s Police Commissioner, Kevin Bethel, revealed at a news conference that at least one student, a 16-year-old, was critically wounded, having been struck nine times. The remaining victims were reported to be in stable condition. This incident follows a concerning trend of escalating violence within the city’s transit system.
The police were alerted to the incident through numerous 911 calls reporting a “mass shooting on the highway near Dunkin Donuts” in northeast Philadelphia, according to police spokesperson Tanya Little.
The injured students were promptly transported to Einstein Medical Center and Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, as confirmed by John Golden, a spokesperson for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). Fortunately, two buses, a Route 18 bus, and a Route 67 bus, were struck by gunfire, but there were no reports of injuries to passengers or the driver.
