10-8-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The husband of a 29-year-old woman who tragically lost her life following a botched breast enhancement procedure intends to file an official complaint with the Johor Health Department. The grieving 35-year-old businessman, known only as Wong, has scheduled a meeting with the department on August 13th, following a suggestion from Ling Tian Soon, the state health and unity committee chairman.
In an interview, Wong revealed that he had already lodged a police report against the unlicensed beautician responsible for conducting the fatal procedure. The incident occurred on July 29th at a residential property in Taman Mutiara Rini, Skudai, where Wong’s wife, Tan Wei Shan, underwent the ill-fated breast enhancement treatment. It was reported that shortly after the procedure, Tan began experiencing dizziness and feeling unwell at home. She also complained of pain and swelling in her chest.
Concerned for her well-being, Tan sought medical assistance at a clinic the following afternoon, and was subsequently rushed to a private hospital around 7 PM. Initially, Tan had intended to undergo a facelift and was introduced to the beautician by a friend. However, the beautician convinced her to undergo the breast enhancement procedure without disclosing her lack of a license.
Following Tan’s passing, the initial post-mortem examination conducted at the hospital revealed a bacterial infection in her breast area. Wong was informed that a comprehensive report would be available in approximately three months, pending the completion of lab tests on her blood samples. Determined to seek justice, Wong plans to take legal action against the unlicensed beautician responsible for his wife’s untimely demise.
Tan, who leaves behind two sons aged nine and 12, was laid to rest on August 6th. The family had initially planned to celebrate their elder son’s birthday on August 15th, but the tragic turn of events left them devastated. Wong tearfully recounted the heartbreak of witnessing their children grieving at their mother’s altar.
In response to this latest incident, the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has urged for stricter regulations and enhanced enforcement within the beauty and aesthetics industry. Dr. Muruga Raj Rajathurai, the president of MMA, highlighted that this was not the first instance of such fatalities. In 2020, a 23-year-old woman named Coco Siew died after undergoing illegal liposuction at a beauty salon in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. Dr. Rajathurai emphasized the need for authorities to strengthen enforcement measures, citing several other incidents involving unlicensed or unregistered beauty and aesthetics centers in recent years.
